After this show we were asked to come exhibit our project in the Laval Virtual 2016 show. It was the opportunity to defend a project aiming to reduce the use of screens in a show full of VR and AR. Visitors loved the work we made and deeply believed in the smartness of our method (which we elaborated with a doctor) and the design.
This project takes place in the Art&Science University prize 2016. The final presentation, of the work done by the 6 French groups competing, was made at la Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie de la Villette (Paris) in March 2016. The jury was constituted by professionals in design, engineering, entrepreneurship and company boss. Each project was presented in front of the jury and audience, and then detailed on the dedicated exhibition stand.
« Can or can't not go on Facebook today? »
In our society, people are online from dawn to dusk. Our habits have been shattered. Technologies are completely part of our daily life, reinforcing the progress rush, the will for performance and search for happiness. Nowadays newsfeed are endless, interactions are permanent and glory ephemeral. However, the omnipresence of new technologies in our life impact the time we spend with our friends or for our well-being; the more technology we tend to use, the less we spend time in real life. Could you imagine a day without screens? Some can, but some started giving priority to their virtual life.
That is why we created POP OUT, a tool for a healthier relationship with technology. The solution we propose is to have a better understanding of our technology habits through a playful scenario. POP OUT support the efforts and motivation of people willing to change their behavior. The user is challenged in a funny and distracting way, in solo or with friends, leading to the awareness and control of the use of technology.
A challenge a day! POP OUT is made of two items: at home as a smart alarm clock keeping the phone away from bed, in the user's pocket as a phone case. Depending on the habits and goals the user sets, POP OUT generate a mission every morning. To the mission correspond a design displayed through the phone case's grid, useful as a memo and a gauge. Day after fay the user is pushed toward IRL communication and interactions, as well as free cultural activities (shows, concert, theater, cinema, sport...).
As days and challenges go by, the user's behavior change to reach the goals settled, making the daily life more pleasant and anchored in the real world, away from the surplus of screens.
